2019 Week 8 NHL Fantasy Hockey Report

This is my week eight fantasy hockey report for those competing in head to head categories or rotisserie leagues. There are both standard and deep league acquisition targets. This is more of a “waiver wire” report, looking for those who are more likely to be available in your league as opposed to the universally owned players. I also do not recommend any players who play 2 games or less over the next 7 days (Monday to Sunday), with a preference for those with 4 or more games.

Best Standard League Adds (20% to 60% Yahoo ownership):

1) David Krejci, Bos, (30% Yahoo ownership): Krejci once again finds himself in he 30% ownership range, which tends to be his equilibrium value. For a guy who is only eligible at center, he’s owned in the proper number of leagues. Krejci has scored 14 PTS in his last 12 GP and continues to be a productive point scorer. He’s my top recommended streamer this week because he’ll be playing twice on light schedule nights. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday are going to be very busy, so you need to make sure anyone you stream will be able to get into your starting line-up. Krejci works.

2) Blake Coleman, NJ, (30% Yahoo ownership): After a slow start to the season, Coleman has started to produce, scoring 6 PTS in his last 6 GP. Where he brings the most value is in leagues that count hits. The Devils only play 3 games (while many teams play 4), but they play on Tuesday and Thursday when very few teams are in action. There are better players available who will play more games, but the strange schedule around American Thanksgiving will make them harder to fit into your starting line-up.

3) Joonas Korpisalo, Clb, (38% Yahoo ownership): Korpisalo has allowed 2 goals or less in 5 of his last 7 starts. His SV% over the full season is still just .897 (which was exactly where he finished each of the last 2 seasons), but over his last 7 starts Korps has put up a .912. He’s been trending in the right direction and is available in 62% of leagues. He has not yet earned my trust as a long-term add, but I’m willing to roll the dice in the short-term when I need extra starts.

4) Colton Parayko, Stl, (57% Yahoo ownership): Parayko hasn’t exactly been hot lately, scoring 2 PTS in his last 6 GP, on pace for a 34-point season. The best thing about him is the ice time and shot volume, while also contributing hits and blocks. Tony DeAngelo was originally intended to be recommended in this slot as my top streaming defenseman, but TD only played 10 minutes last night, which makes me nervous. Parayko has a safer floor right now.

5) Bryan Rust, Pit, (31% Yahoo ownership): With Sidney Crosby injured, Bryan Rust now finds himself on the Penguins top line with Malkin and Guentzel. Over his last 6 GP, Rust has produced 6 PTS, 25 shots, 14 hits, while averaging 19 minutes per game of ice time. Rust also finds himself on the top power play, which may have lost some of its luster with all the injuries, but still a good place to be. Sid won’t be coming back anytime soon and Rust looks to be safe in his current assignment.

Last Week: Tony DeAngelo, Clayton Keller, Tyler Bertuzzi, Zack Kassian, Antti Raanta

Best Deep League Adds (under 20% ownership):

1) Adam Fox, NYR, (10% Yahoo ownership): Fox was a very trendy sleeper coming into the season, then started slow out of the gate. The scoring has started to pick up in recent weeks, with Fox scoring 9 PTS in his last 12 GP, great numbers for a rookie defenseman. His ice time still lacks consistency, which seems to be a common problem for blueliners under this coach. Despite that red flag, he’s still a better option that most D-men in this ownership range and someone I’d be eager to add in deep leagues.

2) Phillip Danault, Mtl, (19% Yahoo ownership): The line of Tatar, Danault, and Gallagher has been producing reliable numbers all season, with Danault scoring 17 PTS in 23 GP (great for a player this widely available). The Habs easily have the best schedule this week, playing 4 games with 3 of them on light schedule nights. Only being eligible at center is the biggest reason his ownership is this low, but you won’t have a problem squeezing him into your starting line-up this week.

3) Zach Parise, Min, (15% Yahoo ownership): Parise spent most of last season owned in between 65% - 75% of leagues, and was 35% owned on Oct 1. That ownership has since plunged down to 15% after a bad start, but the Zach attack is back! The 35-year-old winger has scored 8 PTS in his last 10 GP. He’s someone you won’t feel bad dropping if he goes cold, but so long as he’s producing, he’s worth owning, especially in deeper leagues.

4) Brian Elliot, Phi, (8% Yahoo ownership): Carter Hart continues to struggle, so Brian Elliot continues to get regular action. Expect that to continue this week as the Flyers have a busy schedule. Over the last 2 weeks, Elliot has produced a 2.35 GAA and .924 SV%. The Flyers have been streaky this month, winning 5 of 6 games before losing 5 of 6. Elliot is not a very reliable goalie in the long-term, but has short-term streaming value in deep leagues.

5) Nick Suzuki, Mtl, (6% Yahoo ownership): Suzuki currently finds himself on Montreal’s 2nd line with Max Domi and has scored 6 PTS in his last 6 GP (averaging 15:28 in ice time). Given Montreal’s schedule, it’s going to be really easy to get Suzuki into your starting line-up. This kid has a high ceiling and significant value in dynasty leagues. 6% owned is too low while he’s getting this level of deployment.

Last Week: Martin Necas, Jonathan Bernier, Robby Fabbri, Conor Garland, Brett Pesce

The 1% (best adds 1% owned or less):

1) John Marino, Pit: The Penguins blueline has been devastated by injury, which has led to Marino averaging nearly 22 minutes of ice time per game over the last 2 weeks, and has produced 8 PTS in his last 12 GP. There’s no doubt he needs to be added in significantly more leagues than he’s currently owned.

2) Oskar Sundqvist, Stl: The past 2 weeks have been productive for Sundqvist, scoring 5 PTS in his last 6 GP, with 17 shots. I found him to be a useful streamer in my 18-team league last season, as he can produce in multiple stat categories.

3) Emil Bemstrom, Cbj: The Bluejackets rookie has scored 6 PTS in his last 7 GP and is currently listed on the top line with Pierre Luc Dubois. Bemstrom only scored 2 PTS in his first 15 GP, so there are question marks about the sustainability of his current run, but there is a potentially high risk to reward ratio in very deep leagues.

Last Week: Adam Gaudette, Tyler Ennis, Andrew Copp
