Team-by-Team Best/Worst NHL Contracts (2005-2022)

What are the 15 best and 15 worst contracts signed by every NHL team (minus Seattle for now) in the salary cap era? These were originally published in a pair of books all the way back in 2020 (my Covid quarantine project), and they were updated with new deals in the summer of 2022 for publication on my blog. Rather than have this as a book, it’s better as a website that can be updated as new deals are signed. Also, every time the cap goes up, then “adjusted cap hit” needs to be recalibrated, so all the prices can be compared in today’s values. That was the biggest issue with doing this project in book format.

One thing you won’t find on these lists are entry level contracts, which are quite often bargains, but they all come from the same cookie-cutter and don’t require the same skill at the negotiating table (other than convincing the player to commit). Also, winning the Stanley Cup while under a contract makes that deal immune from worst contract lists, unless that player barely played in the playoffs. Any active contracts on any worst list that wins a Stanley Cup in the future will be immediately removed and an apology issued.

My latest book The Hockey Economist’s Betting Prospectus is now available. It's a comprehensive commentary on the last 3 years of hockey betting, broken down by team, by category, by strategy, by season. There is plenty of useful information for bettors of all skill levels. It covers pre-pandemic, peak-pandemic, post-pandemic. What worked, what failed. Lessons learned, market trends, team-by-team analysis. What impact did the pandemic have on hockey betting? The market differences between these 3 seasons are discussed at length, and there's a lot to talk about. To read more, visit the Amazon store.

Also note that my stat graphic formatting got scrambled when copy-pasted into Google Blogger, so I’m going to design something new and better in the summer. Statistics on active deals will also be updated.
