Goodbye to 2021, a better year than 2020 by most metrics, or at least the first 11 months. December was a bit of a shit show, but at least my local grocery store never ran out of toilet paper, so it was a step in the right direction. Here are my tops Tweets of the year, as measured by likes and engagements. If you'd like to see my top Tweets from 2020, click here, though that may be a year that most of you would rather forget.
These are presented in chronological order, not from best to worst.
MacKenzie Blackwood is the most added goalie on Yahoo #FantasyHockey today (47% ownedπ) with the news that Corey Crawford is taking a leave of absence. I've been on the Blackwood bandwagon in the past, but I'd like to see how good the Devils are before getting too excited.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) January 8, 2021
Joel Farabee today is 7th on the most added player list and also 2nd on the most dropped list on Yahoo. The market overreacted to the first game, he dominated waivers for 2 days, then after a single zero point game, many sold their stock. Others are still buying. π€·♂️#FantasyHockey
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) January 17, 2021
Bobby Ryan is currently tied for 2nd in #NHL goal scoring. Can we move the NHL trade deadline to Monday? #LGRW

It's never a good sign when you are repeatedly hitting the refresh button trying to get a status update on Cam Talbot. I own him in a #FantasyHockey league where I just lost Samsonov. Note to self: submit claim for Kaapo Kahkonen.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) January 23, 2021
Rasmus Dahlin is among the most dropped players on Yahoo today, scoring 0 PTS in 5 GP, getting benched in their last game. I'm not dumping my Dahlin stock. I'll wait out this slump because it's only a matter of time before he starts scoring again. π€ #FantasyHockey #LetsGoBuffalo
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) January 24, 2021
Guaranteed Emily Kaplan started writing this piece before the Red Wings were embarrassed by the Blackhawks in back-to-back games. There had to be a point during last night's 6-2 loss when she considered deleting the whole thing... π️ #LGRW https://t.co/aivVE3xcGM
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) January 26, 2021
It's ridiculous that I was able to draft David Pastrnak late in the 4th round in one of my #FantasyHockey leagues. That's almost unfair. π₯
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) February 4, 2021
The cool thing about rotisserie #FantasyHockey leagues on Yahoo is unlimited adds (albeit with a cap on GP). My evolving strategy is to downsize my roster with 2 for 1 offers, then stream in every Ottawa and Detroit opponent I can squeeze into my roster week by week. π§
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) February 6, 2021
Oh Boy, #FireBenning is trending on Twitter. When the #Canucks were 1 win away from the Conference final a few months ago, his job looked pretty safe. I couldn't possibly count how often the name Toffoli is repeated on Vancouver sportstalk radio per day, but it's in the hundreds.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) February 7, 2021
Congratulations to Ron Hextall on his new job as General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins. His predecessor jumped on a lifeboat, leaving behind a barren farm system and aging superstars. It'll be interesting to see how Ron navigates his way out of this predicament. #LetsGoPens pic.twitter.com/NSlK4Zwwg5

Auston Matthews has a 60% expected GF% playing with Zach Hyman 5v5, and 49% when they're apart. #LeafsForever were winning hockey games with Hyman chasing pucks on line 1. They move Joe Thornton back to the Matthews line, and have a historic collapse against last place Ottawa. π©
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) February 16, 2021
Jack Hughes was dropped in one of my #FantasyHockey leagues, so I'm submitting a waiver claim. I'm hoping Covid didn't take too much out of him, and don't mind rolling the dice for 3 games against Buffalo to find out. He's 62% owned in Yahoo and has a high ceiling if healthy.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) February 20, 2021
Not to diminish what Brent Seabrook has accomplished in his outstanding career but that's fantastic news for the #Blackhawks that he's retiring. His attempted comeback from injury was causing Stan Bowman serious problems, and this helps their salary cap situation significantly.π°
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 5, 2021
Of all my attempts to build an #NHLBetting algorithm using 2019/20 data, nothing has produced better result than starting goalie save % diff. Betting moneyline on the better starting goalie SV% (>=0.001) won 62% of the time. My algorithm won $1.22 for each $1 bet on 870 wagers
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 10, 2021
I'd love to know what % of bettors actually put money on the Red Wings to upset Tampa. My assumption is that the sportsbooks make massive profit when Detroit covers the puckline +1.5 vs TBL, even more if they win outright. I've got a big bet on the Tampa moneyline. π€¦♂️ #NHLBetting
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 12, 2021
I wish my fantasy team had an Assistant General Manager who could handle the unpleasant responsibility of informing John Gibson that he's losing his permanent roster spot to Thatcher Demko. John was a warrior for us early in the season but it's time to say goodbye. #FantasyHockey
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 14, 2021
It still blows my mind that @YahooFantasy doesn't offer IR+ slots in standard leagues, or at least allow players officially listed as "out" to occupy an IR slot. My resentment will continue to grow each passing week I'm forced to burn an active roster spot on Jack Eichel. π€¬
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 20, 2021
It felt like a smart bet picking the Minnesota Wild +1.5 goals against Colorado, but I learned a valuable lesson. It's unlikely I'll lay another dime on Avalanche opponents going forward (maybe Vegas if there's line value). The Avs started slow, but they're back! ππ₯ #NHLBetting
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 21, 2021
If you bet $100 on the Red Wings to win (moneyline) every game that Jonathan Bernier starts, you're up $855 on the year. If you bet $100 on every Thomas Greiss start, you've lost $1310. That being said, I'm still reluctant to recommend anyone bet π° on Bernier. #NHLBetting #LGRW
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 21, 2021
I'm starting to ask myself; do the Philadelphia Flyers just have bad luck with goaltenders or is the city a legitimate "goalie graveyard"? Is it the fans? Is it the local media? (Bryzgalov is nodding his head) there's enough evidence to suggest it may be a curse. #AnytimeAnywhere
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 26, 2021
With this recent boom in sports collectibles, I'm considering launching a class action lawsuit against Scott Stevens for maliciously devaluing all these Eric Lindros cards I bought as a child. We were all financially invested in Eric's future, until Scott took that away... π’
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) March 27, 2021
I added Jason Robertson to my #FantasyHockey team on Sunday morning as a temporary streamer, but he's scored a goal in every game since, making him hard to stream out. He's up to 26% owned on Yahoo, potting 16 PTS in his last 18 GP. I'm becoming a believer. π
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) April 2, 2021
Juuse Saros has allowed 2 goals or less in 11 of his last 12 starts. He's still available in 37% of #FantasyHockey leagues, but that number is shrinking fast. ππ₯ #NHLBetting pic.twitter.com/lHsZ09Fu7Y
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) April 4, 2021
So Nick Foligno is worth a 1st round pick but Taylor Hall is not? Bjork is a decent player, but I'd say Boston just bought Hall for 25 cents on the dollar. #NHLBruins #LeafsForever
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) April 12, 2021
The last few years Yahoo opted for 2-week championships in standard #FantasyHockey leagues, but now during a pandemic with all these postponements and roster volatility decided to have a 6-day championship. They should have made the regular season 12 weeks instead of 13. π€¦♂️

The #Canucks bandwagon is starting to pull me in. Every win is a victory against covid. My desire to see them knock Montreal out of a playoff spot is palpable.

It's 100% hilarious that someone is flying a plane around greater Vancouver right now with a banner that says #FireBenning, but the timing is off. Losing Artemi Panarin after getting body slammed by Tom Wilson is not how I wanted to start my #FantasyHockey championship... π₯
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) May 4, 2021
Having just possibly lost Artemi Panarin for the rest of my #FantasyHockey championship, I was ready to support a Tom Wilson lifetime ban, even jail time. A $5000 fine has left me feeling very unsatisfied. π ♂️#JusticeForArtemi
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) May 4, 2021
I have trouble believing that Gorton getting fired is in no way related to the recent Tom Wilson incident or the team's response. The Rangers speedy rebuild has been the envy of the league. How can ownership possibly be mad it's taking too long? It makes no sense. #NYR https://t.co/ehDpm0rKJA
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) May 5, 2021
They should just make it illegal to own Connor McDavid in #FantasyHockey next season. It's unfair for any one team to get him... π₯Ί

If you're looking for an edge in your #FantasyHockey league next season, I would strongly recommend subscribing to the @ShortShiftsKK podcast. It's a terrific resource for navigating your roster decisions week-to-week. Thanks for all the hard work this season! ππ
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) May 11, 2021
This might be a controversial opinion, but if I'm the General Manager of the Buffalo Sabres, there's no way I'm trading Jack Eichel. You're almost guaranteed to lose the trade. It's "damned if you do, damned if you don't" but you're more damned if you do. #LetsGoBuffalo pic.twitter.com/q7YXlzF4hx

My prediction for the #StanleyCupPlayoffs final 4 is Colorado, Toronto, Boston, and Carolina. I'll need to sign up for a good bracket challenge by Saturday.

One cool thing about my childhood was that I always won the "my dad could beat up your dad" debates in the schoolyard. My dad was a former pro hockey enforcer who once fought John Wensink.

Very few people had the courage to answer that call... #HappyFathersDay pic.twitter.com/OCwp5cgKel
Yegor Sharangovich had an impressive rookie season, scoring at a 46-point pace, averaging nearly 17 minutes per game. He needs a new contract. The stat line should be worth in the $4M range but he only has 54 GP of NHL experience, so his next cap hit should be near $2M. #NJDevils

As a Red Wings fan, it's encouraging to see the dynasty that Yzerman built in Tampa flourishing. It gives me hope for the future. They might not be done at 2... π #GoBolts #LGRW

Are teams waiting for an update on LTIR rules for next season before pulling the trigger on a trade for an injured Jack Eichel who needs surgery? I'm sure Vegas would love to stash him on IR all season and get him into the line-up in time for a playoff run. πΈ #VegasBorn
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 9, 2021
13 NHL players have signed contracts with an avg cap hit of $10M or more in the salary cap era, and have played a combined 41 seasons at that price tag. Carey Price in 2021 was the first one to win a playoff series. π€ #NHLFreeAgency
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 16, 2021
Please tell me there's a film crew in the #SeaKraken front office right now and that somebody is going to make a documentary out of this NHL expansion process. PLEASE! If they were selling livestreams of their team meetings on pay-per-view, I'd happily pay $100 to watch today. π°
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 19, 2021
Over the last 3 years, Carey Price has posted a .905 SV% at home and .918 on the road. In theory he would be a much better goalie if he played fewer games in Montreal. It's possible he's allergic to Habs fans, though he also struggled in an empty Bell Center this year. #GoHabsGo
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 20, 2021
Steve Yzerman traded for Alex Nedeljkovic and immediately inked him to a 2-year contract for $3M AAV. This begs the question; what deal was Carolina offering him? Did they not think their .932 SV% goalie was worth $3M or did he just sign for a cheaper price with Detroit? π€¨ #LGRW
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 22, 2021
Ottawa Senators fans tonight remind me of myself after Detroit went off the board to pick Moritz Seider in 2019. I would eventually be forced to issue a public apology to Steve Yzerman for my remarks on draft night and learned to stop questioning his decisions... #LGRW #GoSensGo

The phone at the Arizona Coyote season ticket office must be ringing off the hook after the exciting acquisitions of Andrew Ladd, Loui Eriksson, Jay Beagle, and Antoine Roussel.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 24, 2021
I like the draft picks though. They'll be ready to make an impact when the #Yotes move to Houston...
The Jets getting Nate Schmidt and Brenden Dillon is a significant upgrade over Forbort and Poolman. Both are moderately overpaid and significant draft capital was shipped out the door, but at least they're a better team. Heinola's path to the NHL just got more crowded. #GoJetsGo
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) July 28, 2021
I don't have an issue with athletes betting on themselves to win. Unfortunately for Evander Kane, if you bet $100 on the Sharks to win every game the last 2 years, you're down over $2,000. The only way to profit from Sharks games is to bet the L, and it's been cashing out plenty. https://t.co/HLzZkMJHAn
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) August 1, 2021
There is absolutely a relationship between how early a player signs his contract and how much they exceed expectations. Signing an extension 365 days early nets an extra $730K on avg, dropping $2K per day. Players start earning below expectation on day 3 of #NHLFreeAgency on avg.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) August 2, 2021
Ron Francis emerged from this expansion draft process with only 1 additional draft pick in the first 3 rounds of the next 3 drafts. That's a failure. If 1st rounders are hard to find, then stockpile 2nds and 3rds. Meanwhile, the Coyotes added 8 extra picks. #SeaKraken
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) August 5, 2021
Erik Karlsson defeated some tough competition to capture the title of 2021 Worst NHL Contract, narrowly beating Jeff Skinner. I've long suspected that Yahoo deliberately makes bad #FantasyHockey draft rankings to increase the probability that casual/inactive teams will suck, making avid users more likely to win and login more often. That's the only way these make any logical sense. π€
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) September 25, 2021
It brought me no joy whatsoever to draft Mitch Marner in #FantasyHockey. My main concern is what happens when my team starts playing elimination games, with Mitch sitting on the bench looking like he's about to start crying. But he'll kick ass in the regular season! #LeafsForever
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) September 26, 2021
@keepingkarlsson My conspiracy theory is that Yahoo deliberately does terrible rankings to reward avid users and punish casual users. The addicts are more likely to win and login more often. Quality draft rankings makes zombie teams more competitive, which is a problem for Yahoo.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) October 2, 2021
My question for @spittinchiclets; are you sure the guy getting rich betting pucklines is picking favorites -1.5 goals? You slander +1.5, which actually has a much higher rate of return. If people disproportionately bet -1.5, then the value should be on the other side. #NHLBetting pic.twitter.com/KOZ2O9yBBN
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) October 10, 2021
Does Yahoo really expect #FantasyHockey participants to subscribe to their premium service that offers advice for managing your team? The Arizona Coyotes went 5-1 in preseason with Lawson Crouse scoring at a 123-point pace and Carter Hutton posting a .945 SV%. Either this team is better than we're expecting, or it's evidence that preseason performance is completely meaningless. I'm leaning towards the latter...

Jakob Silfverberg has scored 6 PTS in 4 GP, but let's not forget that he paced for 28 PTS last season and has only exceeded 50 PTS per 82 GP once in his career (51 in 2017). I'll need a lot more evidence before I'll drink the koolaid. #FantastyHockey
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) October 21, 2021
There are a few weekend #FantasyHockey streamers who are tempting me right now, but I'm having trouble letting go of Timo Meier and Logan Couture. Both joined my teams on a PTO and are scoring every damned game. Those were my streaming slots. I guess it's a good problem to have.
— Hockey Economist (@Hockeconomics) October 27, 2021
The Anaheim Ducks have only won 2 of their first 9 games, but have covered +1.5 goals 8 times. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild have won 5 of 7 but have covered -1.5 goals zero times and still haven't played a really good team (until Colorado tomorrow). π§ #NHLBetting

I normally save my #FantasyHockey "Free Agent Budget" for playoffs in head-to-head formats, but somebody in one of my 12-team leagues dropped Jake Guentzel, so a big bid is warranted. You need to be in a freakishly shallow league to even consider dropping Guentzel.
