NHL 2018/19 Week 16 (part 2) Fantasy Hockey Report

This is my week sixteen (part 2) fantasy hockey report for those competing in head to head categories or rotisserie leagues. Yahoo is making this a 2 week long match due to the All-Star game and bye weeks, so the picking are slim if you're looking for streamers (in a week when you are more likely to need streamers). There are both standard and deep league acquisition targets. This is more of a “waiver wire” report, looking for those who are more likely to be available in your league as opposed to the universally owned players. This week the list mostly features players who play 4 games in the second part of this 2-week match post all-star break while many teams are on bye.

Best Standard League Adds (20% to 60% Yahoo ownership):

1) Carter Hart, G, Phi, (40% Yahoo ownership): I did not expect Carter Hart to post better numbers in the NHL than he did earlier this season in the AHL, but he has managed to do exactly that (2.66 GAA and .918 SV% in 12 GP with Philly). The rookie may only be owned in 40% of fantasy leagues, but that should be 100% for next week with the Flyers playing 4 games amid the byes. Add him anywhere you can find him. The team sent him to the minors to get work over the all-star break and are expected to recall him shortly.

2) Patrick Hornqvist, W, Pit, (59% Yahoo ownership): Hornqvist has returned from a concussion and the Penguins have a busy schedule in a quiet week. If he was dropped in your league, go add him. He may be worth holding long-term if he can stay healthy. At the very least he’s got great short-term streamer value. Horny had scored 6 PTS in 6 GP before missing 4 games with the injury. The power play exposure he gets in Pittsburgh is as good as it gets.

3) Ivan Provorov, D, Phi, (46% Yahoo ownership): I dropped him in my 12-team standard league back in November, and he’s been sitting unclaimed on the waiver wire ever since. The kid has scored 5 PTS in his last 8 GP, albeit with disappointing shot totals. Still, with the Flyers juicy schedule this week, he’s back on my roster for another try. You may also want to try streaming teammate Radko Gudas is he’s available on your waiver wire.

4) James Van Riemsdyk, W, Phi, (54% Yahoo ownership): After a slow start to the season and some extended slumps, JVR has been scoring lately (6 goals, 2 assists in his last 5 GP). There may not be a better time to get him onto your roster if you need to squeeze out a few extra goals during the bye week. He won’t continue to score at a goal per game pace for the rest of the season, but I’m always a proponent of riding hots hands during busy stretches of schedule.

5) Mats Zuccarello, W, NYR, (25% Yahoo ownership): The Rangers will play Philly, Tampa, and Jersey this week with a red-hot Mats Zuccarello (10 PTS in his last 7 GP). He’s been playing a ton lately as the Rangers are showcasing him to the rest of the league with the trade deadline approaching. Tough to predict what his new deployment will be if he does get moved, but in the short-term he’s a very tempting streaming target. I'd rather have 3 games of Zuccarello than 4 games of Nolan Patrick (who was the other candidate for this spot).

Last Week: Alex Galchenyuk, Jordan Binnington, Nate Schmidt, Kevin Fiala, Alex Tuch

Best Deep League Adds (under 20% ownership):

1) Brandon Tanev, W, Wpg, (18% Yahoo ownership): Tanev is probably already owned in most deep leagues that count hits, but that number needs to be even higher for the 2nd half of this week 16 schedule. The Jets play 4 games and over his last 11 Tanev has produced 7 PTS with 27 shots and 44 hits. Given all the byes, that even has streaming value in shallow leagues that count hits (like Yahoo standard leagues).

2) Bryan Little, C, Wpg, (17% Yahoo ownership): I’m concerned about what will happen to Little’s deployment if the Jets add another center before the trade deadline, but in the meantime, he has great short-term streamer value. Little has scored 9 PTS in his last 11 GP while seeing time on the power play. He’s been tied to the hip of Patrik Laine all season and has even been outproducing the talented sniper this month.

3) Anton Khudobin, G, Dal, (11% Yahoo ownership): If you play in a deep league and need some help reaching your minimum goalie starts, you may have some trouble finding a plug with all the byes. Khudobin has been a very effective back-up this season and the Stars will play back to back games on Friday and Saturday. In his 3 January GP he posted a 1.65 GAA and .938 SV%.

4) Brian Dumoulin, D, Pit, (14% Yahoo ownership): The best way to describe Dumoulin’s fantasy value is a low ceiling and a high floor. You will get a few PTS, good +/-, and some hits. Over his last 12 GP he has scored 5 PTS with 26 hits and a +6. Given the Pens upcoming schedule, I like his streaming potential for the rest of the week.

5) Tanner Pearson, W, Pit, (3% Yahoo ownership): When Pearson was traded to Pittsburgh, there was optimism about his break-out potential. While he has been better than he was in LA, he has not reached the level many had hoped. He has scored 7 PTS in his last 12 GP, but has not been getting any power play time with Crosby or Malkin, limiting his output. That being said, he’s a good streaming option this week.

Last Week: Anders Nilsson, Joe Thornton, Conor Garland, Joonas Donskoi, Brendan Dillon

The 1% (best adds 1% owned or less):

1) Dominik Simon, W, Pit: In his last 11 GP, Simon has scored 7 PTS with 24 shots, 16 hits, and a +4. There aren’t many better options who are also available in 99% of Yahoo leagues this week. The Pens have a busy schedule while many of your players are on vacation.

2) Oskar Lindbolm, W, Phi: Since Simon was already owned in my 18-team league, I had to settle for Lindbolm as a one-week streamer. It’s doubtful that I’ll keep him long-term, but he’s got some appeal this week given the schedule. The kid has seen his ice time rise to the 16-18 minute range over the last 3 games, where he has recorded 3 PTS with 7 hits and a +6.

3) Andrew Copp, W, Wpg: Another forward I’ll be streaming is Andrew Copp (6 PTS with a +6 in his last 11 GP) to squeeze out as many counting stats as possible during bye weeks. Normally I like to recommend at least 1 defenseman in the 1% range, but your options this week are very limited. Travis Sanheim isn’t very exciting.

Last Week: Jordan Oesterle, Calle Jarnkrok, Ryan Carpenter

Safe to drop in Standard Leagues:

1) Brandon Montour, D, Ana: In my 12-team standard league I dropped Montour and added Ivan Provorov to get 3 extra games played. Montour is still 50% owned, which is too high for his production over the last month. The Ducks only play 1 game this week, so he’s a prime candidate to drop for a good streamer (I also added Radko Gudas as a 1-week stream in that same league).

2) David Perron, W, Stl: Perron has been very good over the past month, but he is currently day to day with an injury and the Blues only play 1 game next week. You don’t need to hold a roster spot for this guy in shallow leagues. He is somebody you will want to keep on your watch list when the Blues bye week is over and we know if he has returned from injury.

Last Week: Jake Gardiner, Colton Parayko
