With the NHL skipping the Olympics, Hockey Canada has built an
Olympic hockey team of NHL castaways. A friend sent me a text message today
asking "how many times has the new Olympic hockey team been waived in the
NHL?" It can be hard to find reliably complete transaction data on the
internet, when it comes to something like waivers (especially when
dealing with lesser known players). The "Pro Sports Transactions"
website looks to be the most complete that I can find, so I spent 6 hours one
day copying and pasting hundreds of pages of transactions into a spreadsheet.
So how many times has the new Canadian Olympic Hockey Team been
waived in the NHL? This may not be every single time they've cleared waivers, but that have been placed on waivers at least 39 times, maybe more. I can only find 4 instances where a current team Canada player was claimed off waivers by another NHL team.
