This is my 2021 Week Ten Fantasy Hockey Report for those competing in head-to-head categories or rotisserie leagues. There are both standard and deep league acquisition targets. This is more of a “waiver wire” report, looking for your best options among those who are more likely to be available in your league as opposed to the universally owned players. There are 10 recommendations in total, 2 goalies, 2 defensemen, and 6 forwards.
Best Standard League Adds (25% to 65% Yahoo ownership):
1) Devon Toews, Col, (61% Yahoo ownership): The Colorado Avalanche are starting to heat up after an extended stretch of mediocrity, and Toews has been a contributing factor, scoring 8 PTS in his last 10 GP with a whopping +16. Devon was the beneficiary of a deployment boost while Cale Makar was out. Makar is back, but the good news is that should help Toews because the pair plays together. The Avs have a busy week ahead, and Toews is an especially appealing waiver target for Monday-Tuesday against Arizona. Though he’s a long-term hold, not just a temporary streamer.
2) Pavel Buchnevich, NYR, (50% Yahoo ownership): Buchnevich is a name that pops up on my weekly fantasy reports every so often when he gets hot or gets a deployment bump. That excitement never seems to be permanent, or lead to sustained growth in ownership. He peaked at 20% owned in 2019/20, and was 27% owned at the end of January. His stock price may be trading at all-time high. The winger has scored 11 PTS in his last 8 GP playing with the suddenly improving Mika Zibanejad, and I’m buying stock.
3) Juuse Saros, Nsh, (39% Yahoo ownership): A brutal start to the season and an injury helped deliver Saros onto many fantasy waiver wires, but he’s been red hot, posting a .962 SV% in his last 5 GP. The Predators are still a struggling team, but fortunately they’ll be facing Detroit and Chicago twice each, and neither of those teams have been exactly good. If you’ve got roster space and are really desperate for goaltending, you could also grab Pekka Rinne (who is available in more leagues) to get every Preds game (though I’d rather own Korpisalo than Rinne if he’s available).
4) Carter Verhaeghe, Fla, (50% Yahoo ownership): The breakout of Carter Verhaeghe has hit full bloom, finally breaching the 50% owned threshold on Yahoo, continuing his impressive season cashing in on Barkov residuals. The winger has scored 7 PTS in his last 8 GP, bringing him up to 22 PTS in 29 GP. He seems firmly entrenched on that top line, also providing respectable shot totals and solid +/-. We’ll see if that ownership continues to grow, or if he hits a plateau. His 62-point pace feels sustainable.
5) Oliver Bjorkstrand, Cbj, (57% Yahoo ownership): Oliver Bjorkstrand has been red hot on a Blue Jackets team that’s won 3 of their last 4 games, including back-to-back wins against a solid Hurricanes team. Bjorkstrand scored 4 PTS in those 2 Canes games, giving him 9 PTS in his last 6 GP. The BJs will face Carolina twice at home to start the week before travelling to Detroit for a set. Oliver has been playing on the top line with Foligno and Laine, while also getting a decent share of the power play time (albeit not on the top unit).
Honorable Mentions: Josh Anderson, Joonas Korpisalo, MacKenzie Weegar, Andre Burakovsky, Clayton Keller
Last Week: Mattias Ekholm, Anthony
Cirelli, Alex Tuch, Vitek Vanecek, Brandon Tanev
Best Deep League Adds
(under 25% ownership):
1) Robby Fabbri, Det, (4% Yahoo ownership): The Red Wings offense was anemic early in the season, but has started to pick up some steam as of late (aside from a shutout loss to Dallas last night). One of the drivers of that increasing offensive output has been Fabbri, who has scored 8 PTS in his last 9 GP with a surprisingly positive +/-. He’s been playing on the top line with Larkin and Mantha, as that entire trio has been increasingly productive. The Wings will play 4 games this week, all against non-playoff teams. Robby is 96% available.
2) Adam Boqvist, Chi, (14% Yahoo ownership): This is turning into a break-out season for the young defenseman, who has scored 10 PTS in his last 14 GP, cashing in on the Chicago power play. He missed some time on the Covid list, which helped to supress his ownership numbers, but he’s been red-hot since returning. The downside with Boqvist is that he won’t provide you with many hits or shots. Yes, he has gone pointless in 3 straight games, but at least his ice time was increased in those matches.
3) Devan Dubnyk, SJ, (20% Yahoo ownership): Devan Dubnyk has wrestled the lion’s share of Shark starts from Martin Jones, and has been playing decent hockey over the last few weeks, posting a .915 SV% in his last 5 GP. He’s a risky bet against the best teams in that division. Good news is, the Sharks will play 4 games this week against Los Angeles and Arizona. He’s been on my roto roster for the last 3 weeks, though he tends to be sitting on my bench when the Sharks are playing against good teams.
4) Andrew Mangiapane, Cgy, (8% Yahoo ownership): The Flames will be playing 4 games this week against Ottawa and Winnipeg, both teams that have defensive issues. Over his last 16 GP, Mangiapane has scored 9 PTS with 27 shots and 13 hits. That’s not spectacular, but it’s a decent streaming option in deep leagues when the Flames have a good schedule. You may also want to consider Dillon Dube, who has been playing on a line with Tkachuk-Lindholm, and was also in consideration for this list as a deep streamer.
5) Calle Jarnkrok, Nsh, (10% Yahoo ownership): It caught me by surprise to see how hot Jarnkrok has been for the Predators, scoring 8 PTS in his last 7 GP with 16 shots, playing on a line with Granlund and Arvidsson. Now is the perfect time to make an investment in Jarnkrok as a streamer, as the Preds have a juicy schedule ahead. It’s doubtful that this scoring pace will be sustainable long-term, but right now my gaze is firmly focused on this short-term opportunity. Strike while the iron is hot.
