Fantasy Hockey 2021/22 Week 24 Waiver Wire Report

Welcome to my 2021/22 Week Twenty-Four Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Report for those competing in head-to-head categories or rotisserie leagues. There are both standard and deep league acquisition targets. This report focuses on the best options among those who are likely to be available in your league as opposed to the universally owned players. There are 10 recommendations in total, 2 goalies, 2 defensemen, and 6 forwards. Some of these are only short-term targets, while others you may want to keep permanently.

Best Standard League Adds (25% to 65% Yahoo ownership):

1) Tanner Jeannot, Nsh, (52% Yahoo ownership): I struck gold in one of my leagues this past week when Tanner Jeannot was dropped by a team in a must-win situation when the Predators only played 2 games. In his last 13 GP, the big winger has scored 8 PTS with 25 shots and 58 hits. If your league doesn’t count hits, you might want to skip this recommendation, but otherwise Jeannot is must-own. I also added Robert Thomas from St. Louis to stream specifically Monday-Wednesday against Arizona and Seattle.

2) Tyler Toffoli, Cgy, (62% Yahoo ownership): Toffoli might not play on the top line with Tkachuk and Gaudreau, but he does see time on the top power play while playing a second line role with Backlund and Mangiapane. In his last 15 GP, Toffoli has generated 10 PTS (4 on the power play) with 43 shots and 15 hits. The Flames play 4 games this week, against LA, Anaheim, San Jose, and Seattle. Those are all teams that you can score on. Michael Bunting in Toronto is also worthy of consideration if he’s available.

3) Elvis Merzlikins, Cbj, (60% Yahoo ownership): What vaulted Elvis to my #1 goalie streaming recommendation this week was not outstanding play. Recording an .898 SV% over the last 30 days is hardly anything to get excited about. My enthusiasm came from the Blue Jackets schedule, with their last 3 games being against, Philly twice and Detroit. If he gets the nod in the Boston game, you might want to bench him. For a hotter goalie, Anton Forsberg in Ottawa has a .922 SV% in his last 11 GP, but a slightly tougher schedule.

4) Jaccob Slavin, Car, (58% Yahoo ownership): What I like about Carolina this week is the schedule, Buffalo twice, Anaheim, and the Islanders. You may want to stream some Carolina players just for their first 2 games against Buffalo. Slavin hasn’t been getting any points on the power play, but has still scored 8 PTS in his last 15 GP, with 27 shots and a +11. I’m also interested in Noah Hanifin with the Flames (8 PTS and 49 shots in his last 15 GP), who has been pumped several times this season on this report. Mattias Ekholm in Nashville also has some streaming appeal.

5) Tim Stuetzle, Ott, (37% Yahoo ownership): The Ottawa Senators will play 4 games this week, and Stuetzle has potted 14 PTS in his last 14 GP (with 8 of those on the power play), while adding 28 shots and 25 hits. He centers the Sens second line with Formenton and Brown. You may also want to check your waiver wire to see if Josh Norris or Drake Batherson are available, as that duo is playing on the top line with Brady Tkachuk. In his last 14 GP, Norris has scored 14 PTS (9 on the PP), with 34 shots and 17 hits.

Honorable Mentions: Josh Norris, Michael Bunting, Robert Thomas, Noah Hanifin, Anton Forsberg

Last Week: Tage Thompson, Nick Schmaltz, Jamie Benn, Spencer Knight, Shayne Gostisbehere

Best Deep League Adds (under 25% ownership):

1) Erik Haula, Bos, (11% Yahoo ownership): The Boston Bruins did not need to acquire a 2nd line center at the trade deadline because they already had Erik Haula playing between Hall and Pastrnak. Haula might have been ice cold leading up to the NHL trade deadline (with many Boston fans praying for a new 2C), but Erik has scored 10 PTS in 7 GP since the deadline passed. The Bruins have a 4-game slate ahead, with Detroit and Columbus on Mon-Tue. Teammate Charlie Coyle has produced 12 PTS in his last 13 GP and is widely available.

2) Brady Skjei, Car, (18% Yahoo ownership): As mentioned above, this could be really high scoring week for the Carolina Hurricanes, so I’ve got interest in both Brady Skjei and Brett Pesce (with Skjei being the more appealing of the two thanks to the extra hits). In his last 15 GP, Skjei has scored 6 PTS with 41 shots and 20 hits (Pesce has 5 PTS, 38 shots, and 8 hits in that same span). For super deep leagues, Alexandre Carrier in Nashville is 97% available with 7 PTS in his last 14 GP with 19 hits and a +10.

3) Seth Jarvis, Car, (8% Yahoo ownership): When you go visit your waiver wire to look for potential high upside Hurricanes, add Seth Jarvis to your watch list. The young prospect has scored 8 PTS in his last 9 GP, with 17 shots and 15 hits. He’s currently listed on the top line with Aho and Teravainen (as well as the 2nd power play), but it’s hard to trust the Hurricane lines to stay intact very long. Jarvis is available in 92% of leagues and has a potentially high ceiling given the current lines and the Canes upcoming schedule.

4) Mikael Backlund, (17% Yahoo ownership): If I’m going to recommend that you add Tyler Toffoli, it makes perfectly logical sense to also pump his center. What really clinched this was the Flames aforementioned schedule. It’s an ideal time to own fantasy equity in their roster. In his last 6 GP, Backlund has scored 5 PTS with 17 shots. He had been cold prior to this little hot stretch, so if you want to take a swing at a little more upside, you could try Jeff Skinner in Buffalo, but they have a much tougher schedule.

5) Dan Vladar, Cgy, (7% Yahoo ownership): Jacob Markstrom has started 8 of the last 9 Calgary games, but this week they play 4 times and 3 of their matches are against non-playoff teams, including a back-to-back. It’s a virtual lock that Vladar will see some action in winnable games and would make a good spot-start. If you need more starts, Karel Vejmelka in Arizona will get more saves, but is unlikely to win any games. You could also look for Scott Wedgewood when Dallas plays back-to-back against bad teams on the weekend.

Honorable Mentions: Jeff Skinner, Charlie Coyle, Brett Pesce, Karel Vejmelka, Ross Colton

Last Week: Sean Durzi, Mason Marchment, Kailer Yamamoto, Logan Thompson, Jeff Skinner
