Welcome to my 2022/23 Week Three Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Report for those competing in head-to-head categories or rotisserie leagues. There are both standard and deep league acquisition targets. This report focuses on the best options among those who are likely to be available in your league as opposed to the universally owned players. There are 10 recommendations in total, 2 goalies, 2 defensemen, and 6 forwards. Some of these are only short-term targets, while others you may want to keep permanently.
Best Standard League
Adds (25% to 65% Yahoo ownership):
1) Mason Marchment, Dal, (60% Yahoo ownership): Mason Marchment was added to one of my fantasy teams last week, and I’m not selling my stock at this time. That team of mine is in a tight match this week, and I did not drop him for a Sunday streamer despite being an off day. Marchment will be on my team until he gives me a reason to drop him having scored 6 PTS in 5 GP with 15 shots. The Stars play 4 games, albeit with some tough opponents on busy nights. Joel Eriksson Ek is playing top power play (and second line) in Minnesota also has a very juicy schedule coming up.
2) Alexis Lafreniere, NYR, (54% Yahoo ownership): The former first overall draft pick is playing on the Panarin line, with the Rangers playing 4 games this week. They do have 2 Vezina level goaltenders likely on the slate, but they also face the Arizona Coyotes on Sunday. Lafreniere has 18 shots and 8 hits in his 5 GP, which is respectable. He was added to one of my teams last night. The New Jersey Devils have a great streaming schedule and fellow former first overall pick Nico Hischier has started the season on fire, scoring 6 PTS in 4 GP, playing top line top power play.
3) Josh Morrissey, Wpg, (55% Yahoo ownership): Morrissey was on this list last week, and if you streamed him in on my advice, you may as well let it ride for the week ahead because Winnipeg has some weak opponents on their upcoming 4-game schedule. If Morrissey isn’t available, Calen Addison is owned in half as many leagues and has been killing it on the Minnesota power play. He was one of my deep league sleepers in preseason, scoring 6 PTS (4 on the power play) in his first 5 GP, but be warned, he only has 7 shots and 2 hits with a -6 in those games. Not great peripherals, but who doesn’t like points?
4) Chandler Stephenson, Veg, (37% Yahoo ownership): Stephenson is currently centering the 2nd line with Mark Stone while also seeing time on the top power play unit, scoring 5 PTS in his first 6 GP. Vegas has an ideal streaming schedule with some juicy opponents on the itinerary. Also having multi-position eligibility, means it should be easy to get him into your starting line-up for all 4 games. Chandler was a runner-up on my draft bargain list in September, back when he was being drafted very late or not at all in standard 12-team leagues.
5) Anton Forsberg,
Ott, (66% Yahoo ownership): There aren’t many quality goaltending streaming
options coming up in the 25% to 65% ownership range, as the better options
don’t have good schedules. I’m reaching a bit beyond the 65% cap I generally
impose here to recommend Forsberg if you can find him, though Ottawa will face 3 tough offenses this week, so it's risky. Jake Allen earned some
consideration after a strong start to the season, but they don’t have a great
schedule either. Maybe stream him in for the Buffalo start. Or stream in Antti
Raanta if he starts against the Flyers. Actually, you are probably better off adding my
deep league recommendations in your shallower league, so please scroll down.
Honorable Mentions: Nico Hischier, Calen Addison, Jake Allen, Joel Eriksson Ek
Last Week: Matty Beniers, Josh
Morrissey, Carter Verhaeghe, Mathew Barzal, Linus Ullmark
Best Deep League Adds
(under 25% ownership):
1) Eric Comrie, Buf, (23% Yahoo ownership): Eric Comrie very well could have been my “standard league” recommendation this week, but technically still finds himself in the deep league ownership range. The Sabres are off to a 4-1 start and Comrie is 2-1 with a .930 SV%. I’m actually considering adding him in a 12-team standard league, as the Sabres will be facing 3 teams who missed the playoffs last season (and will probably miss again in 2023). His stock is on the rise, and if this continues, he won’t be available much longer. You may also want to try Stuart Skinner, as the Oilers play 4 games this week and he has a .944 SV% in 2 GP.
2) Nick Robertson, Tor, (24% Yahoo ownership): If Robertson can stick on the 2nd line and 2nd power play for the Leafs California road trip, he could present a potential gold mine as a fantasy streamer. He’s a risk to be sent down to the minors at any moment, but so long as that deployment lasts, he’s worth adding in more than just deep leagues. I also have some interest in Danton Heinen, listed on the top line in Pittsburgh with Sidney Crosby and playing 4 games. That may not last, but is a lucrative investment while it does.
3) Rasmus Sandin, Tor, (4% Yahoo ownership): Sandin has had to battle for ice time early in the season, but has played over 20 minutes in each of the last 2 games which included time on the power play. He also has 19 hits in 6 GP. The Leafs will be playing 4 games this week, 3 of them in the state of California which has had some shaky goaltending early in the season. It’s a good opportunity to stream in any Toronto player, even Mark Giordano might pick up a few PTS. If you want some hits, maybe try the 4-game Jani Hakanpaa in Dallas.
4) Reilly Smith, VEG, (16% Yahoo ownership): Reilly Smith is currently deployed on the top line in Vegas with Jack Eichel, and also the 2nd power play unit. The best thing about Vegas this week is that they play on some light schedule nights, and are particularly appealing for a Friday-Sunday stream against Anaheim and Winnipeg (they also play San Jose on Tuesday). It’s worth checking out which Vegas players are available in your league this week. William Karlsson is also widely available and has scored 4 PTS in the first 6 games.
5) Kaapo Kakko,
NYR, (11% Yahoo ownership): Kaapo Kakko is currently listed on the Rangers top
line with Mika Zibanejad, which is the best reason to give him a try this week,
as his stat line is unimpressive. Kaapo has only scored 2 PTS in 5 GP with 11
shots and 4 hits. You’re betting on residuals here, or maybe it’s better to
just stream him Sunday for the Coyotes game. You might get a little more upside
from Dawson Mercer, who is playing on the top power play in New Jersey, and on
the 2nd line with Jack Hughes.
Honorable Mentions: Stuart Skinner, Mark Giordano, Dawson Mercer, Jeff Carter, Danton Heinen
Last Week: Travis Konecny, James
Reimer, Luke Schenn, David Krejci, Oliver Bjorkstrand
