Welcome to my 2022/23 Week Ten Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Report for those competing in head-to-head categories or rotisserie leagues. There are both standard and deep league acquisition targets. This report focuses on the best options among those who are likely to be available in your league as opposed to the universally owned players. There are 10 recommendations in total, 2 goalies, 2 defensemen, and 6 forwards. Some of these are only short-term targets, while others you may want to keep permanently.
I'd
like to take a moment to plug my new book, The Hockey Economist’s Betting
Prospectus. It's a comprehensive commentary on the last 3 years of hockey
betting, broken down by team, by category, by strategy, by season. There is
plenty of useful information for bettors of all skill levels. It covers
pre-pandemic, peak-pandemic, post-pandemic. What worked, what failed. Lessons
learned, market trends, team-by-team analysis. What impact did the pandemic
have on hockey betting? The market differences between these 3 seasons are
discussed at length, and there's a lot to talk about. To read more, visit

Best Standard League Adds (25% to 65% Yahoo ownership):
1) Joel Eriksson Ek, Min, (61% Yahoo ownership): If you’ve been following my waiver wire reports the last few years, you’ll know that I love Eriksson Ek as a categories league streaming target whenever the Wild have a good schedule. Points, hits, shots, power play. He checks a lot of boxes. The Wild play 4 games in the upcoming week, Mon-Wed-Fri-Sun against teams struggling defensively. You may also want to try Tyler Seguin in Dallas (with 10 PTS and 32 shots in his last 14 GP), but they do have a tougher schedule than Minnesota.
2) Pyotr Kochetkov, Car, (46% Yahoo ownership): There was a very competitive list of goalie streaming options in the 25% to 65% ownership range for the week ahead. Dan Vladar, Stuart Skinner, John Gibson and Anton Forsberg were all finalists who have been playing well lately with busy schedules coming up. I already own Skinner in one league (and will be hanging on to him), but Kochetkov was my primary target for my other team, sporting a .914 SV% in his last 10 games, getting a large majority of Carolina’s starts with Andersen injured. Be warned, Andersen is back on the ice, but no word yet on when he’ll be back in game action. That might make Skinner or Vladar a safer play. I'm currently streaming Vladar in one league, but plan to swap him out for Kotchetkov Sunday morning.
3) Blake Wheeler, Wpg, (62% Yahoo ownership): If you added Wheeler as a streamer last week on my advice, now is not the time to drop. You may as well let it ride. The Jets have a 4-game week coming up, and Wheeler has scored 15 PTS in his last 10 GP. He’s playing top line, top power play and is on a wicked heater. Wheels has also taken 25 shots in his last 6 GP. I’m also interested in Andrew Mangiapane, more due to the Flames juicy schedule than the winger’s 4 PTS in his last 6 GP on the second line.
4) Seth Jarvis, Car, (29% Yahoo ownership): Seth Jarvis is currently playing on the Hurricanes top line with Aho and Necas, but only on the second power play unit. Jarvis is eligible at both wing positions and has scored 6 PTS in his last 6 GP with 15 shots and 11 hits (technically riding a 6-game point streak). Seth was 64% owned on Dec 1st, so his stock has dropped after high expectations, but this is a good week to bet on his revival. Meanwhile, Max Domi has been putting up good numbers on the Chicago power play.
5) Noah Hanifin,
Cgy, (58% Yahoo ownership): The Calgary Flames play Mon-Wed-Fri-Sun, all
against teams who have been struggling at goal prevention. It’s worth checking
which Flames are available in your league, and grab Noah Hanifin if you need D.
His offense hasn’t exactly been spectacular, scoring 6 PTS in his last 12 GP,
but it’s the schedule that’s spectacular this week. Minnesota has an equally
juicy schedule and Jared Spurgeon is available in a few more leagues, scoring 5
PTS in his last 6 GP.
Honorable Mentions: Jared Spurgeon, Dan Vladar, Andrew Mangiapane, Tyler Seguin, Max Domi
Last Week: Jakob Chychrun, Karel
Vejmelka, Jake DeBrusk, Blake Wheeler, Kevin Hayes
Best Deep League Adds (under 25% ownership):
1) Dawson Mercer, NJ, (16% Yahoo ownership): Dawson Mercer is currently deployed the New Jersey top line, top power play with Jack Hughes, scoring 8 PTS in his last 9 GP. The Devils should be facing some really good goaltending this week, but Mercer is available in 84% of leagues and can still really help you in deeper formats. If you’d like an option with a better schedule, Adam Ruzicka is on a heater in Calgary, scoring 10 PTS in his last 12 GP, while also adding 15 hits. Ruzicka’s shot numbers are less impressive.
2) Cole Perfetti, Wpg, (26% Yahoo ownership): He might not be playing on the top power play unit, but Cole Perfetti has been very productive on the top line with Scheifele and Wheeler, scoring 10 PTS in his last 10 GP, with 24 shots. The Jets play on some busy nights, but at least Perfetti is eligible at all 3 forward positions on Yahoo. They’re a great team to target Sat-Sun vs Vancouver and Seattle. The Rangers also have a busy schedule and Lafreniere is currently deployed with Zibanejad and Kakko, worthy of consideration.
3) Erik Haula, NJ, (14% Yahoo ownership): If you’re unable to get Mercer or want to double down on Jack Hughes residuals, Erik Haula is the other player currently deployed on the Hughes line, scoring 5 PTS in his last 7 GP, with 11 hits. The shot numbers leave much to be desired, you’re just hoping for a home run based on the Hughes exposure. You could also try Dillon Dube, playing on the 2nd line and 2nd power play in Calgary, scoring 5 PTS in his last 7 GP.
4) Akira Schmid, NJ, (17% Yahoo ownership): The Devils are going to be playing 4 games this week and Akira Schmid has a .940 SV% and 5 wins in his last 6 games. Vanecek just had a rough start against the Islanders, so Schmid could get 2 starts this week, ideally against the Rangers and Flyers. Those are 2 very winnable games for Jersey. I’m also mildly interested in Charlie Lindgren, who is filling in as Washington’s #1 while Darcy Kuemper is injured, they just have a difficult schedule. Lindgren has won his last 3 starts, all with a .933 SV% or higher.
5) Cam Fowler,
Ana, (19% Yahoo ownership): This is Cam Fowler’s 3rd appearance here
in the last 4 weeks, as the Ducks defenseman continues to put points on the
scoresheet, with 12 PTS in his last 12 GP. Anaheim has another 4-game week, and
at least 3 of their opponents have issues with goal prevention. Ducks suck, but
they can score goals. Calen Addison was a finalist for this slot until he was
healthy scratched Friday night, so if you can’t find Fowler, K’Andre Miller can
really help you in leagues that count hits.
Honorable Mentions: Charlie Lindgren, K’Andre Miller, Alexis Lafreniere, Adam Ruzicka, Dillon Dube
Last Week: Spencer Martin, David
Krejci, J.T Compher, Pavel Zacha, Travis Sanheim
